Shiatsu is a body-oriented therapeutic method with roots in Eastern traditions, in which attentive and focused pressure is applied to the body. The Japanese words shi and atsu literally mean ‘finger’ and ‘pressure’. Zen shiatsu is a particular development of shiatsu that took shape in Japan and in which touch, awareness and bodily perception come together in a natural and respectful way.
A zen-shiatsu treatment aims to promote relaxation, support recovery and help restore balance between body and mind. Many clients experience a greater sense of calm, physical ease and inner balance both during and after a session.
During a shiatsu treatment, pressure is applied using fingers and hands, and at times also knees or elbows. In this sense, the therapist works attentively with their own body as an instrument. The intensity of the pressure is always carefully adapted to the client and should consistently be experienced as comfortable and respectful.
A treatment session lasts one hour and costs € 82.50. Many health insurers in the Netherlands offer partial reimbursement through supplementary insurance policies. For an up-to-date overview of reimbursements per insurer, please click here.
